The Stolen Heir by Holly Black

Wren is a changeling, a replacement for a human baby that a fairy stole. Wren is a creature created out of magic and snow. The color of her skin is very pale and ever so slightly blue. The parents of the family Wren was part of suspected something was off, but never really tried to find out. One day, her real parents come to get her, telling her she will become the princess of Faerie and that she must come with them. They take her to their kingdom where they try to tame her into obedience, but Wren runs away and lives in the woods. After a few years, she gets tracked down by the prince of Elfhame and is told she has to help him on his quest to find Mellith’s heart. When Mellith’s heart is given to the Faerie queen, it is said that there will be peace in Elfhame. However, Wren is reluctant to agree as the Faeire queen is the person who caused her years of pain and misery. Wren quickly realizes that the prince is someone she knows from her childhood, Oak. Oak had helped Wren escape from the king and queen in the past, so Wren decides to trust him and join him on his mission. While on the hunt for the heart, Wren finds herself falling for Oak, even when she tries her hardest not to. Wren always thought herself cold and anti-social, but even her heart (that is carved of ice) cannot help but give itself to prince Oak. Quite literally. Throughout the quest, Wren faces her greatest fear and the biggest betrayal in faerie history.

I absolutely loved this book, but I loved the ending even more. There is a huge plot twist that will make you audibly gasp and an amazing ending to look forward to. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy or thrillers over the age of 12, only because of the reading level and some violent scenes. This book is NOT for people who enjoy happy endings.
